Sona khanum Ibrahim gizi Valikhan

(June 19, 1883 – April 4, 1982) — ophthalmologist, honored scientist, professor, department head of the Azerbaijan Medical Institute, deputy director for scientific affairs of the Azerbaijan ET Institute of Ophthalmology, chairman of the Azerbaijan Society of Ophthalmologists.

She was the first female ophthalmologist (1933), the first Azerbaijani woman to receive the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences. Confirmation of the depth and value of his scientific work in 1931, his article “On the pathological anatomy of endophthalmitis” attracted the attention of the Nobel Committee and his nomination for the Nobel Prize was registered. Due to the outbreak of the Second World War, his scientific work was not successful. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star, the Badge of Medical Excellence, as well as 2 medals. She is the daughter of Ibrahim Rahimov.

Mrs. Sona Valikhan graduated from the Petersburg Medical Institute in 1908 and became the first woman doctor with higher education in Azerbaijan.

In 1923-1939, S. Velikhan worked as an assistant, docent and professor at the Department of Eye Diseases of the Azerbaijan Medical Institute, and in 1939-1971, A. He was the head of the Department of Eye Diseases of the Aliyev Azerbaijan State Medical Training Institute. In 1946-1960, S.I. Valikhan held the position of deputy director for scientific affairs of Azerbaijan ET Institute of Ophthalmology.

Sona Valikhan is the author of more than 60 scientific works, including 2 monographs. His scientific works are mainly devoted to the morphological changes of the visual organ damaged by leprosy, syphilis, tuberculosis and various tumors, eye damage, glaucoma and trachoma problems. S. Valikhan was the first Azerbaijani woman to receive the scientific degree of doctor of medical sciences.

Confirmation of the depth and value of his scientific work attracted the attention of the Nobel Committee in 1931 with his article “On the pathological anatomy of endophthalmitis”. S. Valikhan devoted most of his life to the noble work of training ophthalmologist personnel, under his leadership, 3 doctorates and 18 candidate theses were defended.

Prof. S. I. Along with clinical work, Valikhan also carried out extensive consulting work, along with scientific-pedagogical and treatment activities, he also treated social problems with great responsibility. In 1945-1950, he was the chairman of the Society of Ophthalmologists of Azerbaijan.

Professor Sona Velikhan was awarded the honorary title of Honored Scientist, awarded with orders and medals.
